Program Duration: One Academic Year (Master’s Level)

This scholarship aims to strengthen Uganda’s biomedical engineering capacity, nurturing the next generation of innovators in medical devices, diagnostics, and healthcare technology.

Focus Areas

Applicants must propose a research project aligned with at least one of the following:

Health Problem Areas:

• Cardiovascular diseases

• Blood disorders

• Chronic movement disorders

Technology Focus:

• Biomaterials and drug delivery systems

• Point-of-care diagnostics

• Biomedical imaging

• Artificial intelligence and data analytics

Eligible Master’s Programs at Makerere University

Candidates must be enrolled in one of the following programs:

• MSc in Technology Innovation and Industrial Development (CEDAT)

• MSc in Computer Science (COCIS)

• MSc in Immunology and Clinical Microbiology

• MSc in Health Informatics

• MSc in Bioinformatics (CHS)

Scholarship Benefits

Selected applicants will receive:

• Full tuition coverage at Makerere University

• Monthly stipend to support living expenses

• Research funding for thesis/project work

• Mentorship from leading biomedical engineering experts in Uganda and the U.S.

Eligibility Criteria

Who Can Apply:

• Ugandan nationals with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a health-related field from a recognized university

• Currently enrolled in one of the listed Master’s programs at Makerere University

• Completed the first year of the MSc program with good academic standing

• Interest in medical technology and innovation

Selection Requirements:

• Strong academic background and relevant skills

• Clear motivation and research interest aligned with the program focus

• A concise research concept addressing health-tech needs in Uganda

• Willingness to attend an oral interview (scheduled for May 2, 2025)
