The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship 2023-2024 is an all-expenses-paid research scholarship available to international students and researchers. This fellowship offers the selected candidate a comprehensive package that includes a research stipend of up to NT$60,000, a round-trip economy-class ticket, accident insurance, and a medical insurance coverage of NT$1 million specifically for accidental injuries.

The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship is an initiative created by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to recognize and support foreign experts and scholars who have a keen interest in conducting advanced research on topics such as Taiwan, cross-strait relations, the Asia-Pacific region, and Sinology. This fellowship provides an opportunity for selected individuals to pursue their research projects at universities or academic institutions located in Taiwan.

To date, the MOFA Taiwan Fellowship has accepted a total of 934 scholars from 78 different countries. In alignment with the APEC Scholarship Initiative, this fellowship program reserves 12 openings each year specifically for scholars and experts from developing APEC economies. The exact number of recipients for these exclusive Chinese Taipei APEC Fellowships depends on the annual budget allocated by the MOFA.

Scholarship Coverage:

The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship provides the recipient with the following benefits:

  • Monthly grants are paid at the beginning of every month.
    • Professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows: NT$60,000.
    • Assistant professors, assistant research fellows, or doctoral candidates: NT$50,000.
  • One round-trip, economy-class ticket for the most direct route to Taiwan, subsidized between the applicant’s country of residence and Taiwan. The maximum subsidization amount can be checked through this link.
  • Accident insurance coverage, along with a NT$50,000 medical insurance specifically for accidental injuries, totaling NT$1 million.

Note: During the fellowship period, recipients are prohibited from receiving any scholarships awarded by other governmental agencies, public or private academic institutions, or schools based in Taiwan. Furthermore, recipients are not permitted to engage in part-time employment without obtaining prior consent from MOFA.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the MOFA Taiwan Fellowship, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Required Languages: English
  • Eligible Countries: All World Countries
  • Recipients must hold the following positions:
    • Foreign professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students at related departments of overseas universities.
    • Research fellows at an equivalent level in academic institutions abroad.
  • Recipients are required to submit a written research report (minimum of 20 pages) to MOFA within three months after the completion of the project.
  • During their stay in Taiwan, recipients are expected to participate in academic seminars and relevant activities organized by MOFA and its authorized organizers.

How to Apply:

To apply for the MOFA Taiwan Fellowship, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Review the application guidelines thoroughly.
  2. Prepare the following documents:
    • Resume, including a publication list.
    • Research proposal.
    • Two letters of recommendation.
    • One letter of agreement from the highest administrative director of your institution.
    • Additionally, check the process for applying for a Chinese STUDENT VISA.
  3. Complete the online application form and upload all the required documents.
  4. Print the completed application and send it via postal mail to the R.O.C. (Taiwan) Embassy or Representative Office.

Note: If you are unable to travel due to unforeseen circumstances and need to postpone the implementation of the grant, you have the option to request a delay through your local ROC (Taiwan) embassy or representative office. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will assess the proposal and, if approved, the research must be completed within the same calendar year, specifically before December 31st.
