About Umeå University

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s leading public research universities, known for excellence in life sciences, medicine, biotechnology, and interdisciplinary research. The university attracts researchers from across the globe and provides a collaborative environment equipped with modern laboratories and cutting-edge research infrastructure.

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics is internationally recognized for conducting high-impact biomedical research and training early-career scientists.

About the Research Project

Integrating Mitochondrial Protein Quality Control with OXPHOS Biogenesis

The selected postdoctoral researcher will become a member of the Andreas Kohler Laboratory, where the research focuses on understanding how mitochondrial Protein Quality Control (PQC) systems regulate mitochondrial function during ageing.

The project specifically investigates the relationship between Protein Quality Control mechanisms and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) biogenesis, with particular emphasis on proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA.

Researchers will use the yeast model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae together with advanced experimental approaches, including:

Biochemical analysis

Study protein interactions and mitochondrial function using advanced biochemical techniques.

Proteomics

Analyze large-scale protein expression and protein dynamics within mitochondria.

Flow Cytometry

Measure cellular responses and mitochondrial activity using high-throughput flow cytometry.

Molecular Biology Techniques

Apply molecular cloning, gene expression analysis, and functional experiments to investigate mitochondrial biology.

This multidisciplinary project provides an outstanding opportunity for researchers interested in mitochondrial biology, ageing, protein quality control, and cellular metabolism.
