The PhD fellowship is part of the SlowRisk Project, an interdisciplinary initiative examining how communities understand and respond to long-term disaster risks.

The project focuses on hazards that evolve gradually, particularly rock avalanche risks monitored by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).

Although Norway has sophisticated monitoring technologies, researchers still know relatively little about how local communities interpret warning systems, develop trust in scientific information, and adapt to living under continuous disaster risk.

The successful applicant will help investigate these important social dimensions while contributing to research that can improve disaster preparedness worldwide.

Educational Requirements

Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS) plus Master’s degree (120 ECTS), or
• Integrated Master’s degree (300 ECTS)

Candidates should normally achieve a minimum academic performance equivalent to Grade C (3.0 GPA equivalent) in their Master’s programme, including an independent research thesis.

Applicants holding degrees from universities outside Norway will undergo an academic equivalency assessment according to Norwegian higher education standards.
