Individuals from across Africa are welcome to submit their applications for admission to pursue a Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa at the esteemed Centre for Human Rights, situated at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

The program, known as the Human Rights and Democratization in Africa (HRDA) LLM/MPhil, is a highly regarded and rigorous one-year course. It provides a comprehensive education to a select group of 25-30 outstanding candidates, who will have the opportunity to spend six months in Pretoria and another six months at one of the 12 partner universities located throughout Africa.

Scholarship Details:

The Centre for Human Rights’ HRDA program serves as the central hub for the African regional program within the Global Campus of Human Rights.

The Global Campus of Human Rights is a global network of universities supported by funding from the European Union. It operates through collaboration between seven Regional Programs, each located in a specific region. These regions include Europe (based in Venice), South East Europe (based in Sarajevo/Bologna), the Caucasus (based in Yerevan), Africa (based in Pretoria), Asia-Pacific (based in Bangkok), Latin America and the Caribbean (based in Buenos Aires), and the Arab world (based in Beirut).

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the Call for applications for the Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa (HRDA), applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be from the African region.
  • Applicants should be seeking admission to pursue a Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights.
  • Applicants must be prepared to enroll in the program on a full-time basis.
  • Graduates of the program will automatically become members of the HRDA Alumni Association, which currently has 537 active members engaged in various areas of human rights work.
  • Applicants must possess a first degree in Law (LLB, license en droit, or licenciatura em direito) or an Honors degree that is relevant to human rights and democratization.
  • Individuals from all African countries are welcome to apply for admission to study for the Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa.
