David Johnston–Lebovic Foundation International Experience Awards 2026 in Canada

The David Johnston–Lebovic Foundation International Experience Awards 2026 are competitive funding opportunities offered by the University of Waterloo to help students gain valuable international experience in Israel. Supported by the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Foundation, these awards recognize the leadership and global education vision of former University of Waterloo President David Johnston.

The program provides financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students participating in approved academic exchanges, international co-op placements, or volunteer experiences connected to their studies. By reducing financial barriers, the awards encourage students to develop global perspectives, strengthen professional skills, and enhance their academic learning through international engagement.

Degree Level

Applications are open to students enrolled in:

  • Undergraduate (Year One)
  • Undergraduate (Year Two)
  • Undergraduate (Year Three)
  • Undergraduate (Year Four)
  • Graduate programs

Available Subjects

Students from all faculties and academic programs are eligible to apply.

Approved international experiences include:

  • Academic exchange or study terms
  • International co-op placements with minimal pay
  • Volunteer placements related to academic requirements
  • Other approved international learning experiences connected to a degree program

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants may receive funding based on the type and length of their international experience.

Funding includes:

  • Up to CAD 2,500 for a one-term academic study experience
  • CAD 2,500 to CAD 5,000 for a one-term work or volunteer placement
  • Up to CAD 10,000 for a two-term work or volunteer experience

Award amounts are determined based on:

  • Duration of the international experience
  • Type of approved activity
  • Academic performance
  • Available funding

Eligible Nationalities

The scholarship is available to:

  • Canadian citizens
  • Permanent residents of Canada
  • International students holding a valid Canadian study permit

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program at the University of Waterloo.
  • Participate in an approved international experience taking place in Israel.
  • Meet the minimum academic requirements:
    • Undergraduate students: normally at least a 70% average.
    • Graduate students: normally at least a 75% average.
  • Ensure the international activity supports academic, research, or co-op requirements.
  • Demonstrate strong academic achievement and a commitment to international learning.

Application Process

Students must submit an application to be considered for the award.

Application steps include:

  1. Complete the International Experience Award application form.
  2. Submit the application through the University of Waterloo Undergraduate Studies Forms page.
  3. Graduate students should consult the Graduate Studies Office for additional application instructions.
  4. Most international experience funding opportunities require only one application form.

Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as their international experience has been approved.

Application Deadlines

Applications are reviewed once each academic term.

Upcoming deadlines are:

  • March 15
  • July 15
  • November 15

Submitting an application before the deadline improves the chances of timely funding consideration.

Selection Process

Awards are granted through a competitive selection process based on:

  • Academic excellence
  • Quality and relevance of the international experience
  • Duration of the approved activity

Final selections are made by the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office (SAFA) at the University of Waterloo.
