Full Financial Support

  • Annual maintenance allowance
    • Up to £21,000 per year for PhD students
    • Adjusted according to the duration of Master’s and Diploma programs
  • One economy-class return airfare
  • UK student visa fees
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

Additional Funding

Depending on individual circumstances, scholars may also receive:

  • Up to £2,000 for academic conferences and professional development
  • Dependent child allowance of up to £16,548 for families with two or more children
  • Financial support during approved fieldwork
  • Paid maternity or paternity leave for up to six months
  • Hardship funding for unexpected financial emergencies

Important: Applicants receiving another scholarship or salary may have their maintenance allowance adjusted. Bench fees and research equipment are generally not included.

  • Full-time or part-time PhD (October 2026 entry)

  • Eligible one-year full-time postgraduate courses

Current University of Cambridge Students

Current Cambridge students may apply if:

  • Applying for a new postgraduate degree (such as MPhil to PhD).
  • They are current Gates Cambridge Scholars applying for another eligible degree.

Applicants cannot receive funding for a degree they are already studying.

Courses Not Eligible

The following programs are not covered:

  • Undergraduate degrees
  • Affiliated BA
  • MASt programs
  • Business-related degree programs
  • Non-degree programs
  • Most part-time courses (except approved pilot PhD programs)
